Boiling Point: Babangida Aliyu, Showunmi, Oyekan Set to Debate Nigeria's Electoral Integrity Ahead 2027

By: Online Editor

As national conversations intensify around Nigeria’s evolving electoral framework, a high-stakes electoral reform debate examining the implications of the new amendments to the Electoral Law takes centre-stage on the popular monthly interview discourse, Boiling Point Arena, holding on Sunday March 8, 2026.

On the podium as Guests/Discussants for the explosive debate are three prominent Nigerians including former Governor of Niger State, Dr Mu'azu Babangida Aliyu, a Governorship Hopeful in Ogun State, Otunba Ṣẹgun Showunmi, and a United Kingdom-based Research Fellow, Prof. Olugbenro Oyekan.

The once-in-a-month current affairs programme, now in its 41st edition, is to be transmitted via Zoom and broadcast live on on six partnering radio stations across Lagos, Ogun and Delta States.

With an incredibly large online followership and wide listenership base, Boiling Point Arena is anchored by a media professional and public relations strategist, Dr Ayo Arowojolu.

Foremost traditional ruler, Oba Prof Saka Matemilola, is the keynote Speaker and Chair to herald the debate over a two-hour duration.

The topic of discourse this time is: "Electoral Law Amendment: Reform for Credible Democracy or Legal Engineering for Political Advantage?”

The trio of Babaginda Aliyu, Showunmi and Oyekan are to draw from their deep knowledge of Nigerian political history to interrogate all the issues surrounding the amendments in the Electoral Law in a balanced and intellectually stimulating session.

The Discussants are to in particular take a look at the contentious issue of electoral integrity, weighing in on the operations in terms of neutrality of the electoral body itself, the INEC, deployment of technology and need for transparency.

Quite expectedly, the Speakers would also address the trust deficit by opposition elements as to whether or not suspicions generated as reflected in the groundswell of protests against what many tagged not far-reaching amendments are justified.

Dr Mu'azu Babangida Aliyu is well versed as an old breed politician as he was elected to the Federal House of Representatives in 1983 for Chanchaga Federal Constituency of Niger State. He subsequently got elected as Governor of the State in 2007.

One interesting characterization of Aliyu's Administration was his adoption of the prefix to his name, Chief Servant of Niger State as he rejected being addressed as His Excellency throughout his tenure.

For his part, Otunba Segun Showunmi is a political thought leader and Promoter, The Alternative Movement. He is as well an aspirant in the race for Governorship of Ogun State.

Prof Olugbenro Oyekan is a prominent Research Fellow at the University of Oxford, England.

A Professor of Practice in Management and finance, he is also Dean at the International School of Management(ISM), Lagos.

A well publicized discourse, Boiling Point Arena, will be broadcast live on WASH 94.9FM, Sweet 107.1FM, Roots 97.1FM, Erimbe 94.7FM, Women Radio 91.7FM and Kruzz 92.9FM as well as a cable television, NSTV on GoTV channel 316.

Boiling Point is a news and general interest Group comprising of eminent personalities including over 300 Professors, media professionals, technocrats, industry leaders, High Court Justices, traditional rulers, security top shots and several others.
