The Rector of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Dr. Adeoye Odedeji has announced that starting from the 2024/2025 academic session, all ND2 and HND2 students will be required to complete practical training programmes in specific skills or trades alongside their academic coursework.
Dr. Odedeji disclosed this in an exclusive interview with OPEN TELEVISION NAIJA (OTN) News correspodent immediately after the Made-in-Mapoly Distinguished Entrepreneurs Awards 2024, held at Otunba Gbenga Daniel (OGD) Hall on Wednesday.
The Rector emphasized the importance of skill acquisition as a complement to academic degrees and diplomas, explaining that skills training enhances students' employability and adaptability in a rapidly changing world.
"Acquiring practical skills allows students to gain competence in particular trades, making them versatile and increasing their job prospects," he said.
The new training initiative aligns with the National Skills Qualification Framework, developed by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and other stakeholders.
This framework will enable students to gain certifications in various skill levels, from entry level up to advanced levels, based on their qualifications and experience.
OTN News further reports that Dr. Odedeji revealed that the National Board Technical Education (NBTE) has approved MAPOLY to offer courses in electrical installations, plumbing, and mobile device and laptop repair.
All students will be required to choose one of these trades to develop expertise in during their studies.
Additionally, digital competency will be made mandatory, equipping students with dual skills in both practical and digital domains.
The Rector concluded that these programmes will be conducted in collaboration with certified organizations, ensuring that upon graduation, students receive accredited certifications in both their practical and digital skills, setting them apart as well-rounded professionals ready for the modern workforce.
